Pestilence is a side quest you’ll want to tackle in Kingdom Come Deliverance. It involves investigating a strange illness that’s plaguing the town of Merhojed, and preparing a remedy for those afflicted. There’s a pretty cool twist there, which happens if you try to cheat and ignore your academic shortcomings. If you want to avoid the unpleasant surprise, you should read our Kingdom Come Deliverance Pestilence quest guide.
How to craft/brew potions?
In order to brew a potion, you’ll have to find an alchemy bench. Most towns that have an apothecary should have one. The bench itself will contain some ingredients, like spirits and water. The rest is up to you – you’ll have to collect the ingredients and mix them in the correct order. Upgrading your reading skill will let you interpret the recipes correctly – although guesswork can help, a low reading skill will show you the wrong ingredients.

If you try to brew the potion without sufficient reading skill, the game will trick you by showing you the wrong ingredients. You’ll end up making a potion that will kill the entire village. You’ll still be able to complete the quest and get the info you need from a certain letter, but your conscience will have to bear the burden.
So you’ll need to buff up your reading skill. Talk to brother Nicodemus and tell him you’ll read the book. In it, you’ll find out the sickness is actually water poisoning. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be able to brew the real potion. Here’s how:
- Pour water into the cauldron
- Drop two handfuls of thistle inside
- Light up the fire and use the bellows until the water starts to boil
- Boil for two turns of the sandglass (if it stops boiling before the time is up, use the bellows again)
- Drop one handful of valerian
- Boil for one turn of the sandglass
- Let it cool
- Add the charcoal
- Place a phial under the still and pour the potion into it
